Time to reveal the first full color illustration of the planets adventures. The full title of the book is called ‘Hoe jij samen met astronaut Maud de Magistrale en soms zelfs gevaarlijk Avonturenplaneten ontdekte’, which translates as ‘How you discovered the Masterful and yet sometimes even Dangerous Adventure Planets together with Astronaut Maud’. The stories are written by Krista Izelaar and this is her second book in this series.
The first story I got from Krista was about the floating planet, where three legged balloon-like creatures float around until you pinch a hole in their atmosphere with your rocketship and the air get’s sucked out.
These are the first sketches I made of the creatures:
With this first illustration I had a hard time figuring out and I had no idea where it would lead to, so I just started drawing and making occasional scans to discuss the progress with the initiator and art-director Patz. Patz is the founder of CircusPatz, the miraculous story laboratory. You van visit their website for more info.
It started out being too clean he told me. I suits my style, but I needn’t forget that this is a children’s book and there should be lot’s of detail or a child would lose interest.
First version before colouring, drawn on December 18, 2009:
After some time and some colour experimenting:
This is how the drawing turned out eventually. And below you see what it looks like after colouring.
Aaargh! If you follow me on twitter you’ve probably read that a huge pile of fresh drawings got wet because my lovely cat tipped over a water vase. Here’s why the lower left corner of the drawing shows a bubbly structure.
…and a detail:
WAUW!
